Electricity Market Prices – Week ending 29 March 2019

Key electricity market observations for the week ending 29 March 2019:

  • AEMO released the Gas Statement of Opportunity (GSOO) last week which reinforced the very real situation that domestic gas supply and demand balance is tight. AEMO highlight that “Supply from existing and committed gas developments is forecast to provide adequate supply to meet gas demands until 2023. However, risks remain that any weather-driven variances in consumption or electricity market activity could increase gas demand, creating potential peak-day shortages
  • There was a small uplift in water levels for Snowy Hydro however the water storage situation remains concerning.
  • Generation from the brown coal fleet was down due to two units being offline at Yallourn for the majority of the week. Late on Monday night EnergyAustralia attempted to bring unit 2 back online however 12 hours after experiencing milling issues and then a tube leak. It continues to remain offline.
