Electricity Market Prices – Week ending 15 February 2019

Key electricity market observations for the week ending 15 February 2019:

  • QLD weekly average spot price and demand were $91.26/ MWh and 7,230 MW, which were both higher than the previous week by $4.29/MWh and 583 MW respectively. QLD operational demand reached a new all-time record of 10,052 MW at 4.55pm on 13 February, largely as a result of temperature driven demand.
  • With the exception of one Eraring power station, all units operated in the NSW baseload fleet. Unit 1 at Eraring started the week offline after a tube leak occurred on 3 February.
  • SA weekly average spot price and demand were $82.88/MWh and 1,141 MW respectively. Like NSW and QLD, SA experienced a material decline in both spot prices and demand. This was largely driven by cooler temperatures.
  • VIC baseload generation was reduced last week with all power stations having units offline at some point.
