Electricity Market Prices – Week ending 8 February 2019

Key electricity market observations for the week ending 8 February 2019:

  •  The Australian Institute published a review of the reliability of NSW located coal and gas power stations specifically focused on the major breakdowns throughout 2018.
  • Snowy Hydro water levels continue to decline at a slower rate relative to the same period in 2018. This was anticipated by the market and a key driver behind the increase in the forward curve from mid 2018.
  • QLD weekly average spot price and demand were $86.97/ MWh and 6,647 MW respectively. QLD continues to enjoy the lowest spot prices in the NEM.
  • AGL’s NSW generation portfolio was temporarily reduced at times last week when units at Bayswater and Liddell power station came offline.
