Electricity Market Prices – Week ending 1 February 2019

Key electricity market observations for the week ending 1 February 2019:

  • The Cumulative Price Threshold (CPT) that was activated in VIC and SA at 11.30am on Friday 25 January was turned off on Thursday afternoon in both regions as the 7-day rolling period moved past the significant volatility from Thursday evening. As a result, spot prices in SA are no longer capped and floored at $300.00/MWh and -$300.00/MWh respectively.
  • LGC spot prices continued to decline and with volume trading between $34/certificate and $35/certificate on Friday.
  • The Coalition government received 66 applications for support under the construction of new “firm” power stations, according to the Australian Financial Review, with coal, hydro and gas technologies proposed in four states.
