Key electricity market observations for the week ending 11 January 2019:

  • The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) released a report outlining the failure of some generators to respond during a lightning event in August last year. AEMO wants interim rules in place by mid-year to provide “primary frequency control’’ services.

  • Swanbank E combined cycle gas turbine has been generating consistently each day.
  • Generation in NSW was stable with all baseload units continuing to operate.
  • Prices were less volatile in VIC, with the return of Yallourn 3 adding 350 MW combined with increased availability of wind and solar.
