Electricity Market Prices – Week ending 05 October 2018

Key electricity market observations for the week ending 05 October 2018:

  • There was softer demand across the NEM however spot prices generally remained high. Late in the week there was much welcomed rainfall from the Southeast corner of QLD down to the vicinity of Wollongong in NSW.
  • Chain Valley Colliery was put into voluntary administration on Friday after experiencing operational issues and higher costs of running. According to the AFR Chain Valley Colliery supplies roughly 50% of coal to Vales Point power station.
  • Milmerran power station brought unit 2 back online after several months of maintenance on the unit. Shortly after bringing unit 2 back online, unit 1 came offline due to a tube leak however this was repaired within a matter of days.
  • Late on Wednesday AGL adjusted their NSW bid structure as a result of unit 2 at Liddell power station coming offline.
