Electricity Market Prices – Week ending 16 November 2018

Key electricity market observations for the week ending 16 November 2018:

  • AEMO released its 2018-2019 Summer Readiness Report which outlines actions that have been taken in preparation for system security and reliability during summer. AEMO has called out the following factors which heighten the risk of reliability and security issues:
    • Climate conditions (forecasting hot and dry conditions)
    • Peak electricity demand
    • Resource availability (having dispatchable power available when required)
  • There were a number of baseload units offline in NSW, QLD and VIC last week reducing supply in the system and putting pressure on prices
  • 2019 futures increased across all mainland NEM regions
  • LGC prices softened although liquidity remains an issue
