Electricity Market Prices – Week ending 13 July 2018

Key electricity market observations for the week ending 13 July 2018:

  • Forward prices generally softened across mainland NEM regions and spot prices increased, most notably South Australia.
  • Origin owned Eraring power station tripped on Friday afternoon causing volatility in spot prices.
  • There were very high prices on Monday in South Australia caused by a combination of constraints on the network, interconnector to VIC, low generation from wind and bidding behaviour of dispatchable plant.
  • Snowy Hydro continued to generate in a similar pattern observed in Q218.
  • The ACCC released their “Retail Electricity Pricing Inquiry” report. The report makes 56 recommendations which are targeted to reduce electricity prices in the NEM regions.
