Electricity Market Prices – Week ending 22 June 2018

Key electricity market observations for the week ending 22 June 2018:

  • Weekly average spot prices and demand were up in all mainland NEM regions.
  • Forward contract prices increased consistently throughout the week for NSW, VIC and QLD for most periods.
  • Sentiment in the market that there will be delays in renewable projects coming online due to slow connection to the grid appears to be creating bullish conditions in the forward market.
  • The AEMC released their Annual Market Report which highlights that the NEM is going through a significant period of change, characterised by the closure of thermal plant and replacement with intermittent renewables.
  • The draft design technical papers for the NEG were released late on Friday afternoon for consultation.
